Traffic police recorded about 19,060 violations involving drivers without a valid driving license across Greece during the first five months of 2026, according to police data reviewed by Kathimerini.

The figure was slightly lower than the 19,211 violations recorded during the same period in 2025 and well below the 32,272 registered in the first five months of 2024.

In the Athens region, however, violations increased this year. Authorities recorded 9,180 cases in the first five months of 2026, compared with 6,861 during the same period last year. The figure had reached 12,374 in the first five months of 2024.

The picture was more favorable in Thessaloniki, where violations fell from 3,011 in the first five months of 2024 to 1,124 during the corresponding period this year.

The increase recorded in Attica compared with 2025 is attributed partly to intensified traffic enforcement. Specialists also say stricter provisions under Greece’s Highway Code have played an important role.
