The old Durban Drive-In that will be used as the Malawian processing site.

Concerns are growing among North Beach residents and business owners after eThekwini Municipality converted Durban's Old Drive-In Site into a temporary processing and deportation centre for thousands of Malawian nationals relocated from the overcrowded Sherwood Hall facility.

The POST reported that while municipal officials insist the site will operate only as a short-term transit centre to fast-track deportations, some residents fear it could become a permanent fixture in the area.

The relocation follows mounting pressure at Sherwood Hall, where the number of undocumented foreign nationals awaiting repatriation has swelled beyond the facility's capacity.

A North Beach resident who lives opposite the drive-in site said the community had not been consulted before the decision was made and remained skeptical about assurances that the operation would be completed within two weeks.
