Hundreds of Malawian nationals arrived at the Durban Drive in site moments after the site was closed by the municipality, asking for transportation back home.
Hundreds of Malawian nationals have been camping outside the Durban Drive-In centre well after Mayor Cyril Xaba's announcement that the facility was closed. On Monday morning, Zimbabweans who were among those camping at the site were moved to Hoy Park, where they subsequently boarded buses to Zimbabwe.
Blessings Chaya told IOL that he went to the site because of alleged xenophobia from his employer and a lack of documentation.
"I have been in South Africa since 2019. But now I have come here because of my work. I need work payment and documents. Unfortunately, I don't have anything," he said.
Chaya went on to explain that his passport has expired.
