The old Durban Drive-In that will be used as the Malawian processing site.
Concerns are mounting among North Beach residents and business owners following the activation of the Old Drive-In Site as a temporary processing and deportation facility for thousands of Malawian nationals relocated from the overcrowded Sherwood Hall site.
The eThekwini Municipality opened the drive-in site to ease pressure on the Sherwood facility, where the number of undocumented foreign nationals awaiting repatriation has surged.
Municipal officials say the site will serve as a temporary overflow and staging area aimed at fast-tracking deportation processes while improving living conditions for those awaiting processing.
However, some community members fear the facility could become a long-term settlement despite assurances from authorities.
