On March 7, as the United States and Israel continued perpetrating war crimes by bombing civilians and non-military infrastructure in Iran’s capital of Tehran, President Donald Trump convened twelve Latin American leaders to create a Counter Cartel Coalition to extend the “war on drugs” across the hemisphere. The group, called the Shield of the Americas, included some of the most notorious human rights abusers, corrupt politicians, fascist demagogues, and even some accused in their own countries of ties to organized crime. Argentina’s Javier Milei has been implicated in a crypto scam, El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele runs an infamous mega-prison where the human rights of poor Salvadorans and undocumented migrants from other countries are routinely violated, while last year Ecuador’s Daniel Noboa made the outlandish claim that Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iranian military are working with traffickers in his country. Significantly, Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum, Colombia’s Gustavo Petro, and Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva—who represent together more than 60 percent of Latin America’s population—were not invited to join what Hilary Goodfriend called an “emboldened reactionary bloc.”
