Police have opened a murder investigation after a Grade 10 learner at Bellville South High School died following an alleged assault by a fellow learner inside a classroom.
According to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), the learner sustained a fatal head injury during what it described as a "serious and distressing incident" involving two Grade 10 learners.
Despite receiving immediate medical attention and being admitted to hospital, the learner died on Thursday evening, June 11.
WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond extended condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
"Our condolences to the family, friends and school community for this tragic and alarming loss," she said.
