Speculation surrounding the leadership of the Mathulini community has finally been laid to rest after KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli officially confirmed Prince Mazwendoda Luthuli as Inkosi of the uMnini Traditional Authority.

The confirmation makes Inkosi Mazwendoda the recognised traditional leader of Mathulini, succeeding his father, the late Inkosi Phathisizwe Philbert Luthuli, who passed away several months ago.

Following the death of Inkosi Phathisizwe, a dispute emerged over the succession process. Opposition to Mazwendoda's installation surfaced after he was nominated as successor on the day of his father's burial.

The Sunday Tribune previously reported that some members of the Luthuli clan had proposed the name of Busani Luthuli, the late Inkosi's brother and the treasurer of Mathulini, as an alternative candidate for the throne.
