Athens metro and tram operator STASY has confirmed that a ticket inspector who was suspended over allegations of taking bribes from fare evaders was later assigned to a stationmaster role while his case is still before the courts.
The inspector was initially removed from duty following complaints that he solicited €20 payments from ticketless passengers to avoid issuing €100 fines.
According to a report on ANT1, security camera footage allegedly showed him accepting bribes and subsequently using his card to allow passengers through turnstiles.
An employees’ representative said the inspector had since been working as a stationmaster.
In a statement, STASY said the reassignment did not constitute a promotion and followed established procedures, citing the presumption of innocence while legal proceedings are ongoing. It said the employee was initially suspended, referred to the National Transparency Authority and subject to criminal prosecution.
