A woman Inspector of Police attached to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) was placed under suspension following a preliminary inquiry into allegations that she threatened to implicate a revenue officer in a corruption case unless he paid her a bribe. Her immediate superior, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), has been transferred from Chennai to the Nilgiris district for alleged dereliction of duty in supervising his subordinates.Sources said the DVAC recently received an anonymous complaint alleging that a revenue officer in Chennai had been demanding bribes from the public. The complaint was assigned for inquiry to Inspector of Police Vimala on the instructions of senior DVAC officials.During the course of the inquiry, Vimala allegedly summoned the revenue officer and demanded a large bribe in exchange for closing the complaint against him. The officer subsequently lodged a complaint with DVAC Director A. Arun, who ordered a detailed investigation into the allegations.During the inquiry, officials reportedly found evidence that Vimala had threatened the revenue officer while demanding a bribe and recommended disciplinary action against her. Following the findings, she was placed under suspension. The DSP, who supervised her, has been transferred to the Nilgiris district, and disciplinary action has reportedly been recommended against him for failing to adequately monitor his subordinate’s activities.Meanwhile, a fresh complaint has been lodged against Vimala, accusing her of planting cash during a recent raid at a sub-registrar’s office in Chennai.
