Here’s what to do during the weekend of 19-21 June.
With folklore ensembles from as far away as Greece, Mexico and the United States – including dancers representing the Lakota, Dakota, Ojibwe, Cree, Navajo and Meskwaki peoples – the Myjava International Folklore Festival more than lives up to its name. The 66th edition of the event in the western Slovak town of Myjava once again brings together performers from around the world to showcase their traditions through music, dance, costumes and more.
Among the highlights is the Adibashi Chhau Dance Group from eastern India, whose vibrant costumes, elaborate masks and ritual dances reflect the identity and heritage of one of the Indigenous communities of the Indian subcontinent. The festival began on Wednesday and runs until Sunday, with a packed programme every day and the official opening ceremony taking place on Friday evening. If Myjava is a little too far away, don't worry. The 56th edition of the Šarišské Slávnosti Piesní a Tancov folklore festival is also taking place this weekend in the village of Raslavice in north-eastern Slovakia.
