St. Anna Hospital in Varna

St. Anna Hospital in Varna, the largest medical facility in Eastern Bulgaria, is warning that its operations are under serious threat just ahead of the peak summer season, as unresolved financial obligations and delayed public funding put mounting pressure on its stability.

According to hospital management, a municipal allocation of around €400,000 approved by the Varna City Council has still not been transferred. Although the hospital has been granted state permission to restructure a loan, officials say this measure alone is insufficient to restore financial balance.

Health Minister Katya Ivkova previously stated that the hospital’s current liabilities amount to approximately €14 million, with overdue debts reaching €4 million. At the same time, annual income from hospital activity stands at around €5 million, highlighting a significant structural imbalance.

Hospital director Dr. Krasimir Petrov has appealed urgently to both local and national authorities, warning that without immediate intervention the facility risks operational disruption. He stressed that St. Anna plays a critical role as an emergency medical hub for Eastern Bulgaria and the Black Sea region, where patient admissions rise sharply during the summer tourist season.
