The past week showcased two very different but equally exciting faces of lawn bowls, with the festive Umhlanga Ladies Classic (ULC) followed immediately by the district's first Professional Bowls Association (PBA) qualifier for 2026.
The annual ULC, held this past weekend, once again proved why it remains one of the highlights on the ladies' bowling calendar. While the tournament is renowned for the camaraderie and friendships renewed each year, the competition on the greens was fiercely contested as teams battled for a share of the lucrative prize fund.
Fresh from their victory in the KwaZulu-Natal Fours Championship, Cheryl Mostert and Jill Hackland joined forces with Umhlali clubmate Di Montgomery and Widenham's Georgie McKechnie under the team name "Pretty Flamingos" to claim the R20 000 first prize. Although McKechnie is a relatively new name on the Port Natal scene, she has enjoyed a long and successful bowling association with Mostert and Hackland.
