Tayebeh Nazari Makkiabadi, a mother seeking justice for her deceased daughter, Maryam Arvin, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Mashhad Revolutionary Court. Nazari was previously arrested while attending a memorial service marking the seventh day since the passing of Khosrow Alikurdi in Mashhad.
According to the verdict issued on June 12 by Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court under Judge Gholamreza Akbari Moghadam, Nazari was handed a four-year sentence for “assembly and collusion against national security” and an additional one-year sentence for “propaganda against the state.” The trial hearing for these charges took place on May 31.
Tayebeh Nazari is the mother of Maryam Arvin, a young lawyer who was arrested in Sirjan during the 2022 “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests for providing legal defense to detained demonstrators. Arvin died under highly suspicious circumstances shortly after her temporary release from custody.
An informed source spoke to HRANA about the judicial proceedings, stating that during the trial, Tayebeh Nazari was denied adequate time to present her defense, and her legal counsel was granted only a very limited amount of time to speak on her behalf.
