Arthur Zwane’s story mirrors the story of modern Sowetan football.

Born in Meadowlands and raised on the dusty fields that have produced generations of South African footballers, Zwane rose from humble beginnings to become a Kaizer Chiefs legend, a Bafana Bafana international and later a coach entrusted with developing the country’s next wave of talent.

On Youth Day, the former midfielder’s thoughts inevitably return to the township that shaped him. Long before the trophies, national team call-ups and packed stadiums, there were the streets of Soweto.

“The streets of Soweto made us who we are,” Zwane told Independent Newspapers ahead of the 50th commemoration of the Soweto Uprising.
