A TT RIDESHARE driver escaped a robbery ambush in Laventille on Saturday night after using his vehicle to hit one of his attackers, who was later taken into police custody.The 29-year-old driver told police the other suspect opened fire on his vehicle during the ordeal, which police believe may have been a planned set-up involving two passengers.According to investigators, the driver, who was operating a white MG vehicle, picked up two women on Independence Square, Port of Spain, shortly after 9.15 p.m.During the trip, one of the passengers asked to be taken to Wharton Branch Road, Laventille.Police said upon arriving at the location, one of the women got out of the vehicle. Shortly afterwards, two men approached.One of them, armed with a firearm, announced a robbery and demanded valuables from the driver.However, the driver accelerated away.In the process, he struck one of the bandits before escaping from the area.Investigators said the gunman then fired a number of gunshots as the vehicle sped away.The second passenger later exited the vehicle and ran off.The driver was not injured and later reported the incident to police.Officers responding to the report recovered a spent 9mm shell casing at the scene.The victim’s vehicle was also examined as part of the investigation.Police later detained the 19-year-old suspect who was struck by the vehicle while he was seeking medical attention at the Port of Spain General Hospital.He remains in custody as enquiries into the incident continue.
