The pricing structure that sparked outrage
Anthropic’s Claude subscription tiers work like a ladder. The base Claude Pro plan runs $20 per month. A mid-tier option costs $100 per month and provides five times the usage limits. Claude Max sits at the top at $200 per month, offering 20 times the standard usage allowance.
Reports from users indicate that once the usage cap is hit, extra charges can stack up at roughly 20 times the base rate. One particularly striking example involved a user who documented consuming $250 worth of usage value in under 90 minutes. Scale that kind of burn rate across an entire month of heavy use, and the $50,000 figure starts to look less like an outlier and more like a cautionary tale.
