Sihle Makhaye, a 44-year-old man from KZN, tragically lost his life in Russia after being recruited with promises of employment.

The family of Sihle Makhaye, a KwaZulu-Natal man who died in Russia after allegedly being recruited under false pretences, has received his mortal remains following a 69-day repatriation process involving provincial and national government structures.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Royal Hotel in Durban on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma confirmed that Makhaye’s remains had arrived back in South Africa and funeral arrangements were now under way.

The MEC said his office first became aware of the family’s situation on April 8 after receiving voice notes and WhatsApp messages from Makhaye's wife Sbonile Ndwandwe requesting government assistance.

“She requested us to assist her family with the repatriation of her husband,” Duma said.
