Hashim warned that attempts to suppress dissent pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic future, saying that Nigeria is sliding into an authoritarian state.
Former presidential candidate of the Accord Party and Co-Chairman of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has condemned the police attack on human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore and other protesters during the June 12 Democracy Day protest in Abuja.
Hashim warned that attempts to suppress dissent pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic future, saying that Nigeria is sliding into an authoritarian state.
In a statement issued, Hashim described the assault on the peaceful protesters as a disturbing development that undermines the principles upon which democratic governance is founded.
According to him, the rights to peaceful protest, free expression and civic participation are fundamental pillars of democracy and must be protected at all times.
