Fresh indications of a possible realignment within Nigeria's opposition political landscape emerged on Friday as the presidential candidate of the Accord Party, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, met with his Social Democratic Party (SDP) counterpart, Prince Adewole Adebayo, amid ongoing consultations among pro-democracy leaders ahead of the 2027 general election.
The meeting, held in Abuja, is the latest in a series of engagements involving opposition presidential candidates and political figures with longstanding records in Nigeria's pro-democracy movement and a shared commitment to centre-left political ideals.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the consultations are exploring opportunities for democratic cooperation, institutional reforms and a coordinated response to what participants describe as increasing pressure on Nigeria's democratic space.
The meeting also comes as discussions between Hashim and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, have reportedly intensified, fuelling speculation that a broader pro-democracy alliance could be taking shape ahead of the 2027 elections.
