The organisation said it was "shameful and deeply ironic" that citizens commemorating a day dedicated to democratic freedoms were allegedly met with force while exercising constitutionally guaranteed rights.

The Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN) has condemned the attack, harassment, and tear-gassing of peaceful protesters in Abuja, Kaduna, and other parts of Nigeria during activities marking the country's Democracy Day on June 12.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its Executive Director, Yusha'u Sani Yankuzo, Esq., the human rights organisation described the reported actions against protesters as a direct contradiction of the democratic ideals June 12 represents.

According to CEFSAN, June 12 is not merely a date on Nigeria's calendar but a powerful symbol of the sacrifices made by Nigerians who fought for democracy, civil liberties, and the right of citizens to freely express their views without intimidation or state violence.
