The Socio-Economic Right And Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned the use of teargas by the police against peaceful protesters during the June 12 Democracy Day demonstrations in Abuja, leading to many protesters, including the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, gasping for breath and fighting for their lives.

The group described the actions of police and other security operatives as unlawful and a violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under both Nigerian and international law.

SERAP expressed particular concern over Sowore’s reported collapse and being rushed to the hospital after being exposed to teargas fired by security personnel during the protest.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that armed policemen on Friday fired teargas at peaceful protesters marching towards Eagle Square in Abuja to demand an end to rising insecurity, the release of abducted school children, and improved governance.
