The Amnesty International Nigeria has strongly condemned what it described as a “reckless attack” on peaceful protesters during Democracy Day demonstrations held on Thursday at Unity Fountain in Abuja, where human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, collapsed following a confrontation with security operatives.
The global human rights organisation, in a post shared on its official X handle, said the incident reflected a growing pattern of unlawful suppression of civic freedoms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to Amnesty, the deliberate targeting of Sowore and other protesters amounted to a violation of fundamental rights, insisting that the authorities must immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
“The deliberate targeting of Sowore must be investigated. Such targeting of activists solely for exercising freedom of assembly is unlawful and shows utter disregard for the rule of law,” the organisation said.
