Brussels has grown vocally supportive of new nuclear, but its unwillingness to commit any significant funding to nuclear — outside of fusion — is prompting European small modular reactor (SMR) and advanced reactor vendors to expand into the US market, where more funding and support is on offer. This lack of EU funding isn’t stopping preparations for multiple large European newbuild projects, and the EU is offering some support in the form of measures to accelerate permitting or state aid procedures. But even European newbuild projects are relying on US funding to get over the line.
