Donald Trump declared on June 11 that the United States has reached a deal with Iran to eliminate nuclear weapons and bring prisoners home. During a tele-rally, Trump called it a “great deal” and said people would “start coming home very soon.”

Iranian officials have pushed back on the characterization of a finalized agreement, describing the negotiations as ongoing and the claims as premature.

What we actually know

Negotiations between the US and Iran have been grinding forward throughout 2025 and into 2026. The core issues on the table include limits on Iran’s uranium enrichment, disposal of existing stockpiles, and implementation of International Atomic Energy Agency inspections.

One key term under discussion: a 15-year halt on enrichment activities. That timeframe mirrors some of the constraints from the original 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the deal Trump pulled the US out of in May 2018.
