Tiruchi Mayor M. Anbazhagan on Thursday said that around 70% of the construction work on the new overbridge near the Fort Railway Station has been completed and directed officials to expedite the remaining works to ensure the project is completed at the earliest.After the narrow 157-year-old bridge had become weak, the Corporation and the railways decided to demolish the old structure and build a new four-lane overbridge with increased height and width to accommodate growing traffic demand and improve safety.The Corporation is carrying out the construction of retaining walls and approach roads on both the Salai Road and Main Guard Gate sides at an estimated cost of ₹34.10 crore. The railways, meanwhile, are responsible for widening and reconstructing the portion of the bridge that passes above the railway line.Work on the project commenced in December 2023, and the bridge has been closed to traffic since March 2024.According to the Mayor, once the railway portion of the overbridge is completed, the Corporation will finish the remaining approach works on either side, following which the bridge will be opened for public use. He added that around 70% of the work has been completed by the Corporation.The new railway overpass is 31.39 meters long and 20.70 meters wide. The eastern part of the railway bridge is 223.75 meters long and 15.61 meters wide, while the western part is 225 meters long and 15.61 meters wide. The road is being widened with retaining walls.
