The much-delayed motorable bridge across Uyyakondan canal connecting Raja Colony and Bharathi Nagar in Tiruchi is expected to be completed within six months, according to Corporation officials. In 2023, the civic body proposed the construction of pedestrian and motorable bridges across the canal to improve connectivity and better utilisation of available open spaces. Accordingly, ₹1.25 crore was sanctioned from the Corporation’s General Funds for 2024–25 for a motorable bridge connecting Raja Colony with Bharathi Nagar near the Corporation park. The bridge was planned to facilitate the movement of pedestrians, two-wheelers, and autorickshaws.Although work began in May 2025, construction was temporarily halted after concerns emerged over the original design. The initial plan involved erecting pillars within the canal, which could obstruct the free flow of water. To address the issue, the Corporation revised the design by replacing the proposed pillars with retaining walls.Subsequently, after feasibility studies and soil testing, the revised design received approval. However, the changes increased the project cost to ₹1.70 crore, and the original contractor subsequently withdrew. The Corporation then floated a fresh tender and appointed a new contractor to execute the work. After construction resumed last month, officials said foundation works are being expedited and progressing at a faster pace. The bridge is now expected to be completed by December this year.Once completed, the bridge is expected to decongest traffic near MGR Roundabout and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. Motorists travelling from Vayalur Road will be able to use the bridge to reach Tiruchi Railway Junction, Central Bus Stand, and surrounding areas more easily.
