Court papers before the Madlanga Commission have revealed alleged threats against anti-crime activist and Tax Justice South Africa founder Yusuf Abramjee, placing suspended Crime Intelligence boss Major-General Feroz Khan and tobacco executive Mohamed Sayed at the centre of a growing controversy involving the illicit tobacco trade.

The allegations are contained in an affidavit compiled by commission investigator Tshepo Nyatlo, which forms part of evidence being examined by the commission investigating allegations of corruption, criminal infiltration, and misconduct within South Africa's law enforcement structures.

According to the affidavit, the exchanges took place after Abramjee publicly exposed cigarette brands allegedly being sold without paying legally due taxes.

Court papers show that on July 7, 2021, Sayed allegedly sent Khan a message saying: "Abramjee gonna get fucked up bru."

Khan allegedly responded: "f**k him up bro", before adding: "He must stay in his lane."
