Udupi-Chkkamagaluru Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary said the Centre has sanctioned ₹15 crore to undertake road and curve strengthening work on Agumbe Ghat that connects coastal Karnataka with Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts through Malpe-Tirthahalli National Highway 169A.The National Highways division of the Karnataka Public Works Department, that maintains NH 169A, has been directed to erect guard rails for a length of 1,000 m wherever they were damaged.On June 9, Mr. Poojary inspected the ghat section following complaints of increased vehicular movement, and frequent traffic jams on the stretch. He was accompanied by officials of the NH-PWD and the Forest Department.With regard to a permanent solution to traffic congestion, Mr. Poojary said proposals by his Shivamogga counterpart B. Y. Raghavendra for a tunnel road or widening the ghat stretch into four lanes appear appropriate. Tenders have been invited to prepare a detailed project report based on the feasibility report, he said. He told the NH-PWD officials to finalise the DPR tender soon.
