Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi on Wednesday, said the National Highways Division of PWD will widen certain narrow stretches of Agumbe Ghat that connects Udupi district with Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts on Malpe-Tirthahalli National Highway 169A, to the extent possible.Speaking to reporters after inspecting the Ghat along with senior officials and Tirthahalli MLA Araga Jnanendra, Mr. Jarkiholi said there was an urgent need to widen the Ghat road at its starting point from Agumbe-end (after the forest check post), hairpin curves 5, 6, 7 and certain other narrow stretches along the Ghat road.Regarding the proposed tunnel road project to circumvent the Ghat, the Minister said tenders were already called twice to prepare a detailed project report (DPR); but none applied. He said tunnel construction would be highly expensive and added that many such DPRs were done in the past.
