The development came as the prosecution continued presenting its case before the court, amid lingering disputes over documents relating to the minutes of a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on May 21, 2003.

The ongoing trial involving former Minister of Power, Dr. Olu Agunloye, over the Mambilla Power Project took a dramatic turn on Monday after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) fifth prosecution witness (PW5), Mr. John Illya, admitted during cross-examination that part of his earlier testimony was false.

The development came as the prosecution continued presenting its case before the court, amid lingering disputes over documents relating to the minutes of a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held on May 21, 2003.

According to proceedings in court, the controversy stemmed from earlier testimony by the EFCC's lead witness, Mr. Umar Babangida (PW3), who admitted under cross-examination that the anti-graft agency had presented two different extracts of the minutes of the May 21, 2003 FEC meeting.

The issue resurfaced when the fourth prosecution witness (PW4), Mr. Ugochukwu, testified on April 30, 2026. He told the court that extracts from the same document should not differ unless they were intentionally made different.
