The Environment Ministry has rejected a technical environmental study for the planned Evangelismos metro station on Athens’ Line 4, ordering Elliniko Metro to explore additional solutions to minimize tree removal at Rizari Park and resubmit the study.

The ministry said the study failed to demonstrate exhaustive examination of alternatives or that the proposed intervention represented the minimum possible impact on vegetation. Ministry sources described the submission as scientifically weak and unlikely to survive a legal challenge before the Council of State.

The station, the only one on Line 4 where work hasn’t started, is years behind schedule. It is at the intersection of lines 3 and 4 and is authorized to be built within Rizari Park – a site developed through a donation by shipowner Nikos Pateras, whose foundation previously clashed with Elliniko Metro over the project.

The Athens municipality and the Forestry Directorate had issued negative opinions on the study.
