The businessman was found tied and presumed tortured

Seven suspects who allegedly kidnapped, tortured, and assaulted a Cape Town businessman before demanding a R20 million ransom are expected back in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The suspects, Nozuko Nophelo Nyanda, 51; her son, Bonga Nyanda, 27; Patrick Maarman, 46; Faizel Boysie, 33; Asumoni Jimbere, 24; De Jome Brink, 33; and Charmonique Matthys, 28, were arrested on Friday, May 29, and Monday, June 1, by members of the Anti-Kidnapping Task Team. This came after the businessman was kidnapped from his Summer Greens home, with the group subsequently arrested in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, and the coastal town of Saldanha.

Initially, police stated nine suspects were arrested. The group made their first court appearance last week.

This case highlights a disturbing trend of syndicates targeting local entrepreneurs for multi-million rand payouts. The quick rescue operation by the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team underscores intensified police efforts to dismantle extortion networks operating across the Western Cape crime syndicates sector.
