Five men were arrested for allegedly impersonating police officers, kidnapping a man, and demanding a one kilogram gold bar and R200,000 ransom for his release.
Five men who allegedly impersonated police officers, kidnapped a man, and demanded a one kilogram gold bar and R200,000 ransom for his release appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Jainand Rambharasa, 41, of Phoenix; Alen Gilbert, 42, of Durban central; Sanele Gcabashe, 25, of Stanger; Andrian Nkomo, 22, of Ntuzuma; and Khumbulani Nzimande, 28, of Umlazi, were arrested and charged with kidnapping, extortion, impersonating a police officer, robbery, and possession of suspected stolen property.
Gilbert, a Burundian, was also charged with allegedly contravening a section of the Immigration Act by entering and/or remaining in South Africa without a valid permit.
According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly impersonated police officers by wearing SAPS ranks and reflectors.
