Four suspects were arrested in Dobsonville, Soweto, after police uncovered an alleged plot to stage a kidnapping and extort money from family members.

A 28-year-old man from Soweto has been arrested after allegedly orchestrating his own kidnapping in an attempt to extort R100,000 from his family, Gauteng police said.

The alleged abduction was reported to SAPS Johannesburg Central on August 4 2026 after family members were informed that unknown suspects had kidnapped the man and were demanding a ransom for his release.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the report prompted an urgent response from a multidisciplinary team comprising the Provincial Tracking Team, Crime Intelligence, Johannesburg Central detectives, the K9 Unit, Soweto Flying Squad, Fidelity Specialist Services and Vision Tactical was immediately mobilised to locate and rescue the alleged victim.”

The investigation led officers to a house in Dobsonville, Soweto, where the supposed victim was found with three other individuals.
