International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has dismissed claims by Ghana’s Samuel Ablakwa on attacks against foreign nationals, saying several allegations were verified and found to be false.
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has dismissed claims by his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Ablakwa, that foreign nationals have been killed, injured, and unlawfully targeted in large numbers during recent anti-immigration protests in South Africa.
In a public response to remarks made by Ablakwa in a Ghanaian media interview, Lamola said several allegations relating to deaths, injuries, and the treatment of foreign nationals had been verified with South African authorities and found to be untrue.
Lamola said he had watched the interview “with shock and disappointment” because it was “riddled with misinformation and factual inaccuracies”.
Among the claims he rejected was an assertion that 80% of Ghanaians repatriated from South Africa had been in the country legally.
