Gogo Annah Nkosi celebrated her 117-year incredible journey through South African history among family and close friends at her home in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni on Sunday.
At 117 years of age, Gogo Annah Nkosi is not just one of South Africa's oldest citizens but a living testament to resilience and a rich cultural heritage that has endured the trials of time. On Sunday, she celebrated her remarkable 117th birthday in Kathlehong, Ekurhuleni, surrounded by cherished friends and family who gathered to honour her journey.
Dressed in a blue woolen hat and a blanket draped around her shoulders, Gogo Nkosi radiated joy and wisdom, embodying the spirit of a century filled with both tribulations and triumphs. Despite her large family, spanning generations and including over 100 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Gogo Nkosi was celebrated by a small group of family and friends.
Born on June 7, 1909, in Standerton, Mpumalanga, Nkosi has lived through tumultuous periods, including two world wars, apartheid, and the political violence that marred South Africa during the 1980s and early 1990s in parts of Ekurhuleni. Reflecting on those years, she said, "We used to hide in the bushes and mountains during the tough and violent times. It was a horrible period, and even now, I do not wish to remember those times."
