The Constitutional Court has dealt a decisive blow to challengers of the Zulu throne, dismissing with costs the final legal bid to remove King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as amaZulu monarch. The apex court also rejected an application for rescission, effectively bringing the long-running legal battle over the throne to an end.
The Constitutional Court has dealt a decisive blow to the last remaining legal challenge against King Misuzulu kaZwelithini's reign, effectively ending attempts to have him removed from the Zulu throne.
On Friday, South Africa's highest court dismissed an application by Prince Mbonisi kaBhekuzulu and 23 other members of the royal family seeking to overturn its earlier decision that upheld King Misuzulu's recognition as the legitimate amaZulu monarch.
Prince Mbonisi, a half-brother of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini and uncle to King Misuzulu, had approached the Constitutional Court in April in a final attempt to have the court rescind its previous judgment.
The application followed the Constitutional Court's February decision to dismiss an appeal against a ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), which confirmed King Misuzulu's status as the rightful king of the amaZulu nation.
