Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has outlined crime categories involving foreign nationals, including immigration offences, assault and driving violations, while government warns against vigilantism and unlawful enforcement actions.

South Africa’s pressure over crime and border control has intensified again amid growing public debate over illegal immigration, protests and calls for stricter enforcement of immigration laws.

The issue continues to unfold alongside the country’s broader crime challenges, including violent offences and organised criminal activity, which remain key priorities for law enforcement agencies.

In Parliament, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has provided a breakdown of the main categories of crimes for which foreign nationals were arrested and convicted over the past three financial years, in response to a written question from EFF MP Chumani Matiwane.

The question comes amid increasing political attention on immigration enforcement and public demonstrations in parts of the country calling for tougher action against undocumented migrants.
