Unlike countries where families tend to operate more independently, South African households often provide support across several generations.
For many South Africans, middle age is no longer a time to slow down, build savings or enjoy the rewards of years spent working. Instead, it has become a period defined by responsibility, with millions finding themselves caught between supporting their children and caring for ageing parents.
Known as the "sandwich generation", these adults are increasingly becoming the backbone of multigenerational households.
They are the people scheduling doctors’ appointments, paying school fees, helping elderly parents manage chronic conditions and stepping in whenever a family crisis arises. In many cases, they are also trying to maintain demanding careers and households of their own.
While the term may sound like a modern buzzword, the reality behind it is anything but trendy.
