A 30-year-old Charlieville man is expected to appear before the South District Masters' Court after police determined that a reported kidnapping was allegedly fabricated, leading to the unnecessary deployment of law enforcement resources.Daoud Mohammed, of Assaraf Road, Charlieville, Chaguanas, was arrested on Thursday during an operation conducted by officers of the Central Division and charged with wasteful employment of the police.Mohammed was arrested pursuant to a warrant after officers, acting on intelligence, conducted surveillance at a location along Assaraf Road between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.The charge stems from an incident reported on May 9, 2025.Police said Amzard Mohammed, who resides in the United States, received a WhatsApp call informing him that his brother had been kidnapped and was being held captive. The caller allegedly demanded a ransom of $60,000, as well as drugs and firearms, in exchange for his release.A report was subsequently made to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU), prompting an extensive investigation involving specialised officers and resources.Investigators later discovered that Daoud Mohammed had not been kidnapped. Instead, police said he had allegedly been hiding at the home of a friend in Philippine, Palmiste.Following legal advice from the Criminal Investigations Department's legal team and further inquiries by Acting Sergeant Ramdath, a decision was taken to charge Mohammed with wasteful employment of the police. He was subsequently taken to the Chaguanas Police Station, where the warrant was executed.
