A former Kimberley attorney and conveyancer has been sentenced to six years’ direct imprisonment after being convicted of theft and money laundering involving more than R4.6 million in client trust funds.
In a statement released on Friday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Leanne Katherine Sullaphen Macleod, 56, was sentenced by the Kimberley Specialised Commercial Crimes Court following a successful prosecution by the NPA’s Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU).
According to the NPA, Macleod was admitted as an attorney by the Northern Cape Division of the High Court in September 2015 and operated her own legal practice in Kimberley.
"Evidence before the court established that Macleod, who was admitted as an attorney by the Northern Cape Division of the High Court on 18 September 2015 and operated her own legal practice in Kimberley, unlawfully misappropriated trust funds entrusted to her by clients between 2017 and November 2021. She was subsequently struck from the roll of attorneys on 23 December 2021," the NPA said.
