An 80-year-old attorney, Solomon Slom, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Gauteng for theft of an escrow account.
An 82-year-old former senior partner at Johannesburg law firm Fluxmans Incorporated has been sentenced to an effective 10 years' imprisonment after stealing nearly R40 million entrusted to the firm's escrow account.
Solomon Slom was convicted on 290 counts, comprising 145 counts of theft and 145 counts of money laundering, in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the charges stemmed from the misappropriation of approximately R39.8 million from an escrow account that Slom had been entrusted to administer.
"The court sentenced Slom to 10 years' imprisonment for the theft convictions and a further 10 years' imprisonment for the money laundering convictions," Mohlatlole said.
