Porsche’s new 911 GTS blends hybrid tech with old-school driver feel
Go electric. Go hybrid. Go digital. While you’re at it, brace for the annoying and intrusive ‘ping’ from some modern lane assist systems as they jump down your throat for straying within a metre and a half of the nearest road marking.
Keeping up with the times seems to have drained many cars of their very soul. And yet Porsche’s latest 911 GTS range does the exact opposite of what we’ve come to expect. It’s a hybrid, it has all the cabin tech you’d expect from a modern performance car, and yet it somehow avoids feeling sanitised in the process.
It remains a 911 right to the core of its soul.
The hybrid part does come with a bit of a caveat, though, as this system ultimately does more for performance than economy. Its newly developed 3.6-litre flat-six turbopetrol engine produces 357kW and 570Nm on its own, but with the help of a small electric motor, the system outputs are increased to 398kW and 610Nm. Furthermore, a 1.9kWh battery helps power the car’s ancillaries and ultimately reduces fuel consumption by 0.3 litres per 100km, which is no small feat when you consider the new model is 50kg heavier.
