The construction of the new district library in Mayiladuthurai, being built at a cost of ₹4.38 crore, is progressing steadily with major structural work under way.District Collector H.S. Srikanth inspected the project site on Park Avenue Road in Mayiladuthurai municipality and reviewed the quality and progress of construction. He directed the Public Works Department engineers to ensure the work was completed within the stipulated contract period.The ground-plus-two-storey library is constructed over a built-up area of 14,811 sq. ft. near the old bus stand. Officials said the ground floor slab had been completed and column work for the first floor was in progress.The ground floor will house a reading room, lending section, periodicals section, women’s section, librarian’s room, locker room, entrance lobby, and electrical room. The first floor will accommodate the general reference section, children’s section, Tamil section, and internet and photocopying facilities. The second floor will include a librarian’s room, office room, book processing room, multipurpose hall, lunch room, and a dedicated study centre for competitive examination.During the inspection, the Collector reviewed all construction work carried out so far, assessed the quality of material used, and held discussions with PWD officials on the timeline for completion. He stressed on the importance of maintaining construction standards and ensuring timely delivery of the project.Once complete, the library is expected to serve as a comprehensive knowledge hub for students, researchers, and the general public of Mayiladuthurai.
