Almost 80% works in the construction of a seven-storey Thanthai Periyar Library and Science Centre in Coimbatore city is over.

The project is executed by the Public Works Department at ₹300 crore on 6.98 acres near the Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand. The building will cover about 1.98 lakh sq. ft. across seven storeys.

Officials said the facility brings together a public library and science and technology learning spaces. A space-travel-themed lift, capable of carrying up to 30 people, is being installed to simulate a journey from Earth to space.

The science centre, located on the ground and first floors, will feature approximately 90 interactive installations based on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Exhibits include a pin wall, motion and mechanics models, sound and light experiments, optical illusion displays, and energy-related installations. A planetarium is also being set up.

The seventh storey will house a future gallery, highlighting technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and augmented and virtual reality experiences.
