The strengthening of Greek-Chinese cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence dominated a forum hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Athens. The forum brought together business leaders and media representatives from both countries, as 2026 marks the 20th anniversary since the signing of the Greece–China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Opening the proceedings, Chinese Ambassador Fang Qiu emphasized that “both countries will use this dialogue as an opportunity to jointly explore new avenues for cultural exchange and mutual learning, while harnessing the transformative power of technology for the common good.”The Ambassador noted that Greece and China are actively leveraging Artificial Intelligence to enhance cultural exchanges, citing the establishment of the China–Greece Joint Digital Heritage Laboratory and the co-production of the documentary Socrates Meets Confucius. “Through digital technology, we are enabling the Terracotta Army, the Dunhuang murals, ancient Greek sculptures, and the Parthenon to engage in a dialogue across time and space, breathing new life into ancient civilizations in the digital era,” he added.A keynote address was also delivered by Dimitris Melissanidis, founder of Aegean Oil, who highlighted that the strategic partnership between Greece and China, launched two decades ago, has generated substantial mutual benefits.“Although the geographical distance between the two countries is considerable, Greece and China are united by the fact that they are among the world’s oldest civilizations. The truly strategic nature of Greece–China relations has primarily focused on three sectors: shipping, trade, and tourism. The two countries have significantly strengthened cooperation in ports and maritime business activities. The development of the Port of Piraeus by COSCO has positioned it among Europe’s top five ports and the largest port in the Mediterranean. Over the past 20 years, hundreds of Greek-owned vessels have been built in China, making Greek shipowners the most important customers of Chinese shipyards,” Melissanidis underlined.People’s DailyThe forum was also attended by Shaoliang Yu, President of People’s Daily—China’s largest newspaper—and head of a delegation of Chinese journalists. He stressed that “the media in both countries should serve as a bridge between our peoples. They should embrace digital transformation and leverage Artificial Intelligence to innovate international communication methods and jointly create more high-quality content with global reach, telling the story of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation between China and Greece in the new era.”At the same time, the media must overcome the limitations of algorithms by using human warmth to break through the ‘information cocoon’ of the digital age.The Port of PiraeusHAN Chao, Chairman of the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA), highlighted the role of Artificial Intelligence in transforming the Port of Piraeus into a “world-class global hub,” emphasizing that digital transformation and the development of a smart and green port remain key strategic objectives.“The operational efficiency of Piraeus has steadily improved, establishing it as the fourth-largest container port, the second-largest cruise port, and the largest ferry port in Europe,” he noted.Media PartnershipAt the conclusion of the forum, Naftemporiki signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation with China’s People’s Daily. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Naftemporiki Group by Michalis Psilos, Director of Naftemporiki.gr.“Greeks and Chinese may speak different languages and live under different political systems, but they share a common aspiration: to understand the world and leave behind knowledge for future generations. One of the most powerful tools available to media professionals in both countries is Artificial Intelligence,” Psilos stated.
