China is expanding its presence in Athens, the heart of the world’s biggest ship-owning nation, and with the occasion of Posidonia 2026 Chinese companies announced on Wednesday a series of launches highlighting their interest in the local shipping community.
At an event named “Posidonia China Night 2026,” in the context of the Posidonia week, but at a hotel in Attica Riviera, well away from the exhibition’s site by the Athens airport, Chinese state companies formally announced their enhanced presence in the Greek capital and honored the Greek-Chinese cooperation in the industry.
The event, titled “Deepening China–Greece Maritime Cooperation, with Green Innovation and Blue Intelligence,” marked the launch of the Bank of China (Europe) Shipping Finance Center, the inauguration of Chinese shipbuilding giant CSSC’s Greece Representative Office, and the unveiling of the Athens Office of China (Putuo) Shipping Service Industrial Park.
It also witnessed the release of the “Report on Green and Intelligent Development of China’s Shipbuilding Industry,” by the China Economic Information Service, CSSC and Xinhua News Agency, which includes a reference to the significant relations Chinese shipbuilders have cultivated with Greek shipowners. The report reads: “In bulk carriers and oil tankers, Chinese shipbuilders maintain close cooperation with shipowners in Greece, Singapore and other major shipping economies. Greece, the world’s largest ship-owning country, has ordered multiple large bulk carriers and tankers from Chinese shipyards for global ocean-going routes.”
