Ronnie Govender of Newlands Athletic Club will be hoping to finish his twentieth Comrades Marathon this year, earning him his Double Green Number.

With just days to go before the 99th Comrades Marathon, the Ultimate Human Race is once again capturing the imagination of runners and supporters alike. This year’s up run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 14 June, will mark a special milestone for one veteran runner. Ronnie Govender from Parlock in Durban will stand at the start line for the 26th time, hoping to secure his 20th Comrades medal.

Participating in the ultra-marathon since 2000, Govender has completed 19 of the races and is aiming for number 20 this year. But his most memorable race was in 2012, when he crossed the finish line hand in hand with his wife, Michelle Govender.

“This year, I will be taking on my 26th start and, God willing, aiming to earn my 20th Comrades Marathon medal,” said the Newlands Athletic Club member.

“The journey has been filled with highs and lows, triumphs and disappointments, but every start line has taught me something about perseverance, determination and never giving up.”
