The Black Ferns Sevens were completely dominant all season, but just one loss has put their title hopes at risk, with everything to play for in the final tournament of the season.
The Kiwis are sitting second on the World Championship standings, with the final leg of the 2025/26 season kicking off in Bordeaux this evening. The Black Ferns are taking on Argentina, South Africa and France in pool play, with hopes to make it to the final and lift the trophy.
If NZ face and beat Australia in the final, the overall standings will be tied, and the World Championship title will come down to points difference. But Black Ferns Sevens captain Risi Pouri-Lane says that while the team are aware of the fact, it’s not their number one focus.
“I think it was important for us to bring that to light, but it's not at the forefront of our mind,” she says.
“It's definitely not what we'll go into the tournament thinking because we know we've still got to get through Argentina, South Africa and France.”
