The Black Ferns Sevens and Australia remain on course for a final showdown after both qualified for the semifinals of the season-ending Bordeaux tournament.
New Zealand are chasing the SVNS world championship title despite last weekend's semifinal loss to Australia in Valladolid.
Jorja Miller scored twice in a 35-22 quarterfinal win over Japan to book New Zealand’s place in the last four. They will face Canada at 10.30pm on Sunday (NZT), but Stacey Waaka has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament through injury.
Australia meet the United States in the other semifinal.
The men’s title has already been decided, with South Africa clinching the world championship by reaching the semifinals. They will play France.
